Jaw Clicking & Popping

A clicking, popping, or snapping sound in the jaw particularly when opening or closing the mouth is one of the most recognisable early signs of TMJ dysfunction. The sound is caused by the articular disc inside the joint temporarily shifting out of alignment and then snapping back into position as the jaw moves.

Many people experience occasional jaw clicking and assume it is harmless. While isolated clicking without pain or restriction is not always a cause for immediate concern, it is the body’s signal that the joint mechanics are not quite right and without attention, the condition may progress to pain, stiffness, or locking.
