Recognising the Signs of TMJ Disorder
TMJ disorder affects people differently, and symptoms can range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain. Because the jaw is connected to so many surrounding structures — including the ears, skull, neck, and upper back, symptoms may seem unconnected to the jaw at first.
Common signs of TMJ disorder include:
• Jaw pain or tightness, especially in the morning or after eating
• Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth
• Difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully
• Jaw locking in position
• Facial pain or a feeling of pressure around the cheeks or temples
• Ear pain, fullness, or ringing (tinnitus)
• Frequent headaches or migraines, often starting at the temples
• Neck and shoulder tension or pain
• Tooth sensitivity or wear from grinding
