Jaw Stiffness & Locking
Jaw Stiffness & Locking
Jaw stiffness and locking are signs that the temporomandibular joint is under significant strain. Stiffness particularly in the morning or after meals indicates that the joint and surrounding muscles are having difficulty recovering from the demands placed on them. Locking occurs when the articular disc within the joint shifts out of position and temporarily prevents normal jaw movement.
These symptoms can range from mildly inconvenient to genuinely disabling. Some patients find they cannot open their mouth wide enough to eat comfortably, speak clearly, or visit the dentist without discomfort.
